The Rest is History: Embracing Disruption to Make Healthcare Easier for Consumers and Providers

Recently, I was fortunate to speak with the Health Management Academy about my experience in strategic marketing at Blockbuster during the rise of Netflix, and why I believe the healthcare industry has immense opportunity to channel disruption in an effort to make healthcare simpler for consumers and providers.

I believe this story is relevant for healthcare executives because our industry has also been slow to evolve and isn’t designed with the consumer at the center of the health journey. This is why disrupting the status quo and looking ahead to ensure healthcare is simpler for consumers and providers has extraordinary potential in our industry.

This rings especially true with healthcare consumers. Many turn to Healthgrades to research and access information about physicians, procedures and hospitals that will help them make more informed healthcare decisions. They expect conveniences that are available in other industries. And quite frankly, other industries are further along in their ability to meet consumers where they are and serve up relevant information they need immediately. The travel and hospitality industries have already figured this out, especially as it relates to consumer marketing, loyalty and online engagement. Health systems that capitalize on this movement and learn from the successes of other industries will establish themselves as consumer favorites and gain an edge.

Disruption is a good thing. The needs of consumers are evolving at lightning speed, and staying the normal course of business is not an option. Being innovative in our approach means consumers have the information they need at their fingertips to connect with a provider the moment they are searching, and that hospitals and health systems have the technology in place to enable better patient engagement and achieve higher quality outcomes.
